Programming power levels

 

To program spot and flood LED powers of setting 2, 3 or 4; switch on the setting you wish to adjust (using the main Duo switch). Note, the red indicator LED comes on momentarily whenever setting 1 is selected, so identifying settings 2, 3 and 4 is straightforward. Do not turn off main Duo switch while programming unless you wish to exit this function without alteration of existing set up.

 

Battery Level Indicator and Moon Mode

 

'Double switch' to operate moon mode (10mA flood), i.e. (swift double operation of switch, i.e. on-off-on). The red indicator LED will blink 1 to 5 times to indicate battery charge level. Lamp will run in moon mode until next switched off. 

 

The battery level indicator is set for 4xAA cells (Ni-Mh or alkaline), but can be set (via programming function) for use with 3.7v li-ion packs, typically only of interest if using a Petzl Duo headset with an own build battery configuration. 
 
3 second mode memory
 
Omni v5 features 3 second 'last' mode memory. When lamp has been on for more than 3 seconds in any setting and is switched off, then it will automatically restart in the last used setting when next switched on. 

Thermal management

 

The Omni v5 incorporates thermal management in order to protect the module from over temperature operation. This may be significant if using high output setting for extended time periods. If the module is too hot, it will blink and discreetly reduce the power level of the setting being used, typically to a maximum of 350mA on each LED. Otherwise, normal function is not affected, and all settings remain available.

 
Batteries, power and light output 

 
As standard, the Petzl Duo uses 4xAA batteries. It is important to note that the highest power settings of the Omni v5 module, i.e. 700mA flood and 700mA spot, 1400mA combined, may not be achievable dependant on battery type (NiMh or Alkaline), battery quality / condition, and level of charge. Lamp condition is also a factor. If the batteries cannot deliver e.g. the 1400mA required, the lamp will operate as normal, but not at full brightness. The slight upside of this is that reduced power draw from batteries by default will result in extended operating durations. 


In our opinion, 1400mA is at the limit of what can be realistically achieved with Petzl Duo and the best AA cells, given the battery technology currently available. For best result we suggest low self discharge NiMh batteries, such as the 'Eneloop' brand.

 

The regulated power settings levels for modules are given in mA. To determine the approximate regulated duration of light on your battery arrangement at a given power setting, simply divide the mAh capacity of your cell pack by the mA power draw at a given setting. For example, using 2100mAh NiMh low self discharge AA batteries at a power setting of 350mA will give a regulated duration in the region of 5-6 hours.

When the setting you wish to program has been selected, press the v5 programming 'set' switch. The indicator LED will light to show that you are now in programming mode.

 

Using the 'set' switch, you can now loop through the spot LED power levels, off, 50ma, 150ma, 350ma, 700ma. Note, the spot LED will light up, but at lower light levels to avoid blinding when programming. 

At your chosen level of spot LED, press and hold the programming switch to set this level. The programming sequence will now move to the flood LED. 

 

As for the spot LED, you can now loop through the flood LED power levels, off, 50ma, 150ma, 350ma, 700ma. Note, the flood LED will light up, but at lower indicative light levels to avoid blinding when programming. Programming does not allow you to set both LEDs as off.


At your chosen level of flood LED, press and hold the programming switch to set this level.


The programming sequence for this power setting is now complete. The indicator LED will flash several times, and the Duo will then switch on at the new programmed level. Take care not to blind yourself at this point.  


The process can be similarly repeated for any of the settings, 2, 3 or 4.


3 second 'last' mode or 3 second 'first' mode

 

To switch between 3 second 'last' mode and 3 second 'first' mode, switch on Duo to setting

1. Press the programming button. Using the programming button you can now toggle between 3 second 'last' mode (the flood LED will light up) and 3 second 'first' mode (the spot LED will light up).


To set either of these press and hold the programming button. Once released, the indicator LED will blink several times to indicate that this choice has been set.
 
Battery level indicator calibration


To switch between battery type, switch on Duo to moon mode setting. Once the battery level sequence has finished, press the programming button. Using the programming button you can now toggle between AA batteries (the flood LED will light up) and 3.7v li-ion battery pack (the spot LED will light up).


To set either of these press and hold the programming button. Once released, the indicator LED will blink several times to indicate that this choice has been set.
 

Restore factory settings

 

This sequence can be used to restore factory default settings, including power levels of setting 2, 3 and 4, battery type and 3 second 'last' mode function.

 

With main Duo switch in 'off' position, press and hold the v5 programming button. Switch on the Duo, and subsequently release the v5 programming button. Indicator LED will blink several times to indicate that factory default set up has been restored.

The Omni v5 has four factory default power settings (see following table). Setting 1 is fixed. Settings 2, 3 and 4 can be user configured, or just left alone.

 

To switch between the four light output levels, use the down switch on the Petzl Duo. Switch on-off-on-off to sequence between settings 1-2-3-4 ... 1-2 etc, in a looping sequence.
